Lower Ground

The space probably originally functioned as the C17 Survainge Place (Servery) and a circulation space. The one small
window suggests that it was not used for food preparation or for habitable use & it may have doubled-up as an area for wine
storage, the space under the main stairs being quite small for this function in the C17, as wine was served from casks not
bottles. The room is largely unaltered, with the exception of the floor, which is C19 quarry-tiled and the ceiling, which
appears to be a C19 replacement.

Small cupboards and store rooms off this space include the present coal cellar (a C19 pantry) & the current lobby into the
lift shaft (a former store room). Off the coal cellar is a long, narrow gap between the walls of the servants hall and kitchen.
This was opened up at some time for access & for storage.
